I Am the Messenger Part 3 / Chapter 9 Summary

the woman

  • When they wake up, Audrey tells Ed that he's comfortable. Is that a slam or a complement?
  • She also tells him that he knows her the best out of anybody. Then she leaves.
  • Ed thinks about what the guy said to him yesterday about cutting down on the chips—that he knows this means Ed's being watched.
  • He gets to the restaurant and asks to sit in the back so he can watch everyone. He's not sure who he's waiting for, so he wants to be ready.
  • He orders—one for him, one for the Doorman—and waits.
  • Ed's not prepared for what he sees next: his mom, all glammed up and out on a date with a man. Plus she looks happy.
  • Since he doesn't really know what's happening, Ed starts thinking about his dad, remembering the good times when he was young, before his dad drank too much.
  • Ed quickly finishes his food. He feels sick and unsure about what to do.
