I Am the Messenger Part 3 / Chapter Q Summary

the bell street theater

  • The next morning Ed thinks back to all the things he said to his mom, and all the stuff she said to him. This is the first time one of his messages has actually touched his own life.
  • He goes to see Father O'Reilly, whose church is still going strong; the priest tells him everything has a purpose.
  • Next up: Bell Street, the next address on Ed's list. This one's an old movie theater, so Ed goes in and buys a ticket for Casablanca.
  • An old man works there and is excited to have a customer—he gives Ed free popcorn and starts the movie early, just for Ed.
  • Halfway though the movie, the old guy falls asleep, which wouldn't matter except that he's supposed to change the movie reel for the second half of the movie.
  • Ed goes up to see if he's okay, and the guy's totally embarrassed. He gives Ed another movie on the house—any movie he wants.
  • Ed accepts only because he kind of feels like he has to. Then he introduces himself to the guy. But the movie guy already knows Ed's name… Get this: he was warned Ed was coming.
  • By whom? When? Ed asks a bunch of questions, but it's useless and he doesn't find anything more out.
  • The only thing they even told the old guy was that Ed would get a delivery when he's finished; he figured Ed would know when that was.
  • Then the old guy tells Ed to bring a girl tomorrow. Ed decides he'll bring Audrey and he already knows what movie he wants to watch: Cool Hand Luke.
  • Ed visits Milla and reads more of Wuthering Heights to her; she invites him over for Christmas.
  • The next day, Audrey and Ed head over to the theater. Audrey canceled a date to go with Ed, and it's worth it, because Cool Hand Luke is one of her faves.
  • The old guy, Bernie, is excited to see them, and starts the film right away.
  • Ed realizes that Bernie loves the movies so much, and maybe he'd want to watch one down in the seats with them instead of up in the projection room.
  • Bernie can't—this is a special date for Ed and his girl. But Ed and Audrey both insist, and eventually Bernie comes into the theater and sits next to them. He loves every minute of it.
  • When the reel has to be changed, they wake Bernie up so he can change it. Someone's been in the projection room during their viewing, though, and Ed tries to chase after him.
  • There's a new reel in the room, labeled Ed. Hmm…
  • They decide to play it, and Ed heads back into the theater to watch it—Bernie tells him they worked all this out at least a year ago. Woah.
  • Audrey asks Ed if it's always like this. Pretty much, yeah.
