I Am the Messenger Part 4 / Chapter 5 Summary

ritchie's sin

  • Ed heads over to Ritchie's and sees him listening to an old-timey radio. He thinks back to when Ritchie said he didn't want to go home on Christmas Eve, and he knows he's got to be straight with his friend.
  • As they play cards, Ed hears the clock ticking and ticking and ticking. Hurry up, Ed.
  • After they end the game, Ed asks Ritchie to show him the radio next time he's over—Ritchie's stunned and doesn't know what to say.
  • The two friends get down to some real talk—no jokes, no card games, just honest conversation.
  • Ed tells Ritchie he's a disgrace. Ouch, right?
  • But Ritchie says he knows. He used to think he had chronic fatigue, but now he realizes he's just plain old lazy.
  • They go to the river and let the water rush over their feet. Then Ritchie lowers the bomb: all he's ever wanted was to want something.
