I Am the Messenger Part 4 / Chapter 8 Summary

each to each

  • Ed and Marv decide to leave the next day at 6 p.m.
  • When they get to Auburn, where Suzanne now lives, Marv takes a while to work up the nerve to go in, and when he finally does, Ed waits in the car until he comes back.
  • Ed doesn't wait for long, though, and a mere thirty seconds later Marv emerges from the house, bloody and running toward the car.
  • Suzanne's dad, Henry is watching from the doorway and yells at Marv to get lost.
  • Ed jumps out of the car and tries to help his friend up—he sees a little girl in the window, but there's no time to pass around pink cake or anything.
  • Henry is giving Marv a good tongue whipping, when Ed stands up to him. He asks the guy if the little girl is beautiful.
  • Of course she is, Henry replies. That's because of Marv, Ed says. Take that.
  • Then Ed pushes a bit further, and tells the guy that it took a lot of nerve for Marv to come here and stand up to Henry—Marv knew this would happen, and he came anyway. Would Henry have done the same?
  • It's pretty heavy stuff, and Henry and Marv are left just staring at each other.
