The Book of the Lion Chapter 12 Summary

  • Edmund watches the shore as they make their way down the river. Rannulf is lying low, wrapped in a dark cloak.
  • Edmund keeps the horses company. Winter Star is blindfolded but  seems to like the water as little as Edmund does, so he talks to the horse to calm it down. Sir Nigel comes through to check on everyone and seems to look a bit ill himself.
  • Meanwhile, Hubert is running around the ship having the time of his life. Looks like somebody got his sea legs right quick.
  • The next morning, Edmund's seasickness is worse, so he prays to Heaven as desperately as someone who is about to die. Before long, they've left the river and are sailing along the English Channel.
  • Edmund asks about the helmsmen who speak in a very foreign way, and Nigel replies that they're taking them to Normandy.
  • Edmund thinks about the very limited knowledge he has of geography. He remembers that a priest once showed him a map and explained that England was a very small part of the world. Jerusalem, on the other hand, is the center of the world.
  • Edmund feels guilty that he's envious of Hubert as he watches him run around the ship, clearly not affected by the rocking and the waves.
  • The next morning they reach Normandy. Edmund doesn't want to feel too relieved until he sets foot on dry land.
