The Book of the Lion Chapter 22 Summary

  • Edmund is riding slowly behind Hubert. It's been a week and he is on the road to recovery, but still a bit weak.
  • Hubert and Edmund are working to exercise the horses after being pent up in the ship for so long. Edmund has also been brushing up on his own fighting skills.
  • Everyone on the shore is crowding around something. Hubert gallops off to check it out, but Edmund can already guess what it is. Sure enough, it's a rotting dead body, a remnant of a battle the night before when a ship was set on fire.
  • Despite still feeling weak from the fever, Edmund reaches forward and pulls a gold earring off the body.
  • The Crusaders are all distracted by distant sounds, and they watch each army lunge a huge catapult toward the other's camps.
  • Edmund and the other English Crusaders ride back to camp with the Frankish Crusaders.
  • Sir Guy de Renne is the assigned steward of their camp. He greets them at the camp to scold them for wandering around, and then he reaches out his hand to take the gold from Edmund. But Edmund refuses. Fortunately, though Guy is irritated, he lets it go.
  • The sound of excited voices can be heard throughout camp, and then another crash sounds. Hubert states that he will kill an Infidel before the day is through.
