The Book of the Lion Chapter 28 Summary

  • One afternoon, Hubert brings a treat into camp. It's a scorpion, which he insists is a sign of good luck since the scorpion is a creature that stings itself to death. As they watch, the scorpion stabs at the air, but does not touch itself with its poison. Irritated, Hubert steps on it.
  • Finally King Richard is up and about, which livens men's spirits. He wanders around camp, inspecting the wall and giving orders about where it can be weakened. The wall crumbles in bits, but does not fall.
  • Food has become very scarce and the men are weakened by bad food and wine.
  • Also, a group of deserters from Acre have been captured.
  • One day, a group of men ride into camp with fresh fruit for the king that's been kept cold with snow. Bits of snow are passed out to a lucky few, and Rannulf shares a piece of ice with Edmund.
  • Now that the king is well, there will be a battle soon. Saladin has refused to meet with Richard and negotiate beforehand. Everyone in the camp feels happy to fight now—they feel that the king is a good luck charm for their army.
  • The day of battle arrives. Trumpets sound and the Crusaders form a mass before King Richard, who leads them into battle.
