The Book of the Lion Chapter 33 Summary

  • The day begins like any other—with heat and the sounds of fighting and prayers being said over the dying. Then King Richard makes his way to the prisoners dressed in grand armor; the camp watches in expectation.
  • The king makes a simple command, though: Kill them all.
  • The knights hesitate for a minute, but the king gives the command again, and so it begins. Slowly they move through the crowd with their swords, killing each prisoner as they go. Edmund has to keep Hubert from seeing the horrific sight.
  • The men call out the names of the saints as they go. A weak attack comes from Saladin's camp once they become aware of what is going on, but the Crusaders keep them away. Nigel and Rannulf are among them. After a while, though, Rannulf leaves the field, shaking his head.
