The Book of the Lion Chapter 4 Summary

  • Edmund makes his way through town with Sir Nigel until they reach a large, walled building. In the front yard Nigel tests Edmund, knocking him over with a few blows. Meanwhile, he makes rude comments about Otto and his wife, which Edmund resents.
  • Edmund is welcomed into the hall, where Nigel relaxes and tells those around him about the duel that's going to take place tomorrow. Everyone seems to think it's an unfair fight.
  • Edmund notices that even the servants here are better dressed than he is.
  • Nigel starts rattling off his life problems to Edmund. He wanted to go on the Crusades before now but he was sick, and he also had a dream that the guy who killed his old squire came and wanted to work for him. Poor Edmund.
  • Nigel's mood lightens up as he starts talking about the men he's killed, and by the end of the conversation, Edmund doesn't mind him so much.
  • He does mind, however, what his fate will be tomorrow.
