The Book of the Lion Chapter 32 Summary

  • A huge group of prisoners arrive in camp from Acre. Without all of their nice clothing they look hungry and worn; they are placed in a field that has been cleared out for them in camp.
  • Hubert and Edmund enter Acre through the gash in the wall. The large and glorious buildings were built by the French after the first Crusade and are an amazing sight. Priests work to remove the pagan symbols of worship from the church.
  • They pass a pagan woman weeping with hatred in her eyes, but they ignore her and walk on.
  • Edmund and Hubert walk back to camp and are proud of the sight of the flying banners of their army. In the East, they can see Saladin's army recovering from the defeat.
  • Hubert is in very low spirits. Edmund tries to amuse him, but Nigel comments that he's disappointed by his own lack of courage.
  • Almost three thousand prisoners eat food fit for an animal and wait silently for their fate. The Crusaders busily start filling the city of Acre.
