The Book of the Lion Chapter 6 Summary

  • Edmund wakes the next morning feeling horrible—his ankle is swollen and he's starving. A young woman walking by sees him and stops. She's a goose girl, and before long all of the geese are attacking Edmund. She watches as he tries to shoo them away.
  • A man walks out of a cottage nearby with an ax. After shooing the geese off of Edmund, he knocks the peasant girl to the ground. Astounded, Edmund joins in and knocks the old man over.
  • The girl runs into the cottage and Edmund asks for food from the man in exchange for money. As the girl's cries send the neighbors running, Edmund hurries into the house and eats quickly; as he does, he hears people saying that a knight is riding toward them.
  • A warhorse is tearing past the house, out of control. Edmund manages to grab the bridle as it goes past and gets dragged along.
  • Edmund calms the horse down and the rider tumbles off. He demands for Edmund to return Sir Nigel's silver, since everyone is out searching for him, and he then introduces himself as Hubert, the guy that Edmund was supposed to duel.
  • Alan, the king's guy, catches up to them and reports that Nigel spread the word that two young men were hunting together. Alan knows better.
  • Another man rides up to join the crowd. He looks pagan (a.k.a. foreign) and carries a feathered helmet.
