The Book of the Lion Chapter 26 Summary

  • Edmund is killing time at the well, which is a busy place and always full of life. He watches people talk and play around. Something has changed since finding the Saracen at the well: He and Hubert are no longer friends.
  • Nigel comes over and ridicules him for washing himself; then he demands that Edmund go to Hubert.
  • Apparently Rannulf and Hubert got into a spat over Edmund's encounter with the Saracen with Rannulf defending Edmund's actions. As Nigel is speaking, a trumpet is heard.
  • There is a battle going on at sea. A Genoan fleet is trying to make its way to shore, and the Saracens are gathering to fight them off.
  • The battle rages all day, and from a distance the fighting looks almost beautiful.
  • The survivors of the fleet begin to land on the shore, half drunk with wine. In the middle of the commotion, Hubert and Edmund stick together, putting their argument behind them.
  • At the end of the procession, a brooding but righteous-looking man steps on shore and falls on his knees in prayer. When he rises, he draws his sword, which glimmers in the sun.
  • The king has arrived.
