The Book of the Lion Chapter 17 Summary

  • Edmund is left with a very sick, very drunk Hubert. They stumble through the streets of Venice, trying to find their way back. Edmund is wearing the dark cloak of the man who attacked Hubert and he finds a large coin purse full of silver in the pocket. Score.
  • When Edmund feels large hands pick him up from behind, he's too drunk to be concerned. (We're not, though—there's no way this is good, right? Right.)
  • Both boys wake up in shackles. They're in the bottom of a ship and surrounded by animals; Edmund's head is pounding.
  • They hear their own captain's voice and realize that they're on board their own ship. Phew. Wenstan comes down to see them and voice Nigel's disapproval. They've returned the cape and the money to the man they belonged to, a.k.a. the man who attacked Hubert.
  • Edmund tries to sound gallant and deny the theft, but it doesn't work.
  • On the upside, this whole being-grabbed-by-strange-hands thing has gone far better than we expected.
