The Book of the Lion Chapter 3 Summary

  • Edmund is brought to the castle. He's heard exotic stories about the sheriff's castle, but the reality doesn't quite match the tales.
  • The sheriff asks Edmund's name and says that Otto is dead. In a moment of boldness, Edmund is able to speak with courage and swear his loyalty to the sheriff and to the king.
  • The sheriff seems to be impressed and asks Edmund if he's been on horseback before. One of the henchmen questions whether Edmund should be given a second chance but the sheriff dismisses the question.
  • Edmund is handed off to Sir Nigel. He's never seen a knight before, and this guy isn't quite as tall and dashing as he imagined. For his part, Nigel is less than pleased to have a convict's apprentice as his squire.
  • Nigel states that there's another boy in town wanting to work under him, so he proposes a duel between Edmund and this other guy—who's way more experienced with weapons. Poor Edmund's chances look bleak.
