The Book of the Lion Chapter 42 Summary

  • The beach is full of the wounded being taken care of. Wenstan moves about singing happily. He had asked permission to stay in the Holy Land as an assistant to Father Urbino, and seems transformed by the experience of the Crusade.
  • Nigel is better. He struggled with fever at first but the doctors are confident that his arm will heal once he is back home; it's a blow for him to leave and never see the city of Jerusalem. Hubert also must return and stay with him.
  • Rannulf is also going home and has to walk with a cane. He offered for Edmund to continue with another knight, though.
  • Hubert and Edmund are trying to sell Shadow and their other gear; as they do, Edmund thinks about how he will soon be home and see Maud and Elvira.
  • As he rides along thinking about the price he will get for Shadow, he also thinks about how wonderful it would be to see Jerusalem. To his great surprise, he looks up and is able to see the city—he hadn't realized they were so close
  • For a moment he looks away, feeling unworthy to look upon its glory. Huge white buildings and towers stick up out of the horizon, and from a distance it looks as glorious as all the stories made it out to be.
  • A nearby bird seems to sing to him to stay. Edmund turns in the opposite direction and sees the large dark ship that will take him home.
