The Book of the Lion Chapter 37 Summary

  • All morning the army waits for the battle to begin; after a while the king has them move to a new formation. It's difficult to see the enemy army, which is mostly hidden behind some brush.
  • To Edmund's surprise, he finds the army a beautiful sight, poised and ready to strike as one large unit. But there's still no fighting.
  • Finally a swarm of dark and un-armored warriors run forward with spears. Despite the fact that they wear no armor, they look unstoppable and have dangerous energy. The horsemen watch in horror as these soldiers cut through their own foot soldiers.
  • Edmund's job is to tend to Rannulf so he tries his best to keep them both alive as spears go flying by, bouncing off his armor.
  • Eventually the enemies on foot run away… but enemies on horseback replace them.
