- Everyone struggles to recover from the disaster and make sure that the ship stays afloat. Edmund checks on the animals; half of them have been lost. Winter Star is peaceful, though.
- Edmund is given all of Miles's old clothes and things and assigned his job as Rannulf's squire. He feels like a traitor, dressed in a dead man's clothing.
- Father Urbino prays for the souls of the dead. Everyone is shaken, so as a distraction, Edmund asks Wenstan to tell him more about the Holy Land and the Crusade. Wenstan explains that it is their duty as Christians to recover the Cross from the Infidels.
